At our February Penn Dragon meeting at Whale we were so lucky to meet Val Cox aka The Glass Poet. Val is a designer, glass artists and photographer and creator of colorful reactive frit combinations the most famous is Raku ( Reichnbacher's Iris Orange r - 108 ). Val visited with our little group to do a frit demonstration and talk about her new book : Frit Secrets a flame worker's guide to using reactive glass. Val's book is packed full of knowledge on how she started her quest in finding a brilliant ruby pink glass that doesn't turn gray under extreme heat. To testing hundreds of furnace glass to come up with color combinations to create beautiful lamp work beads from tiny pieces of crush glass. I can say I have read this book twice since her demo and each time I have learned something new. It reviews colors , glass forms , frit sizes, applications and trouble shooting certain colors and reactions. Yes I would recommend it too anyone who works with glass. Val is a gentle soft spoken artists who's love of color shows in everything she does from her bead making to her photography she is just so inspirational. I am taking a 2 day class with Val in March I am just so excited. I am hoping some of her skill and inspiration will rub off on me too. all the best Lou

Wale Apparatus Company manufactures and distributes the finest selection of glass, tools, supplies and equipment, it is a lamp workers heaven. And they have sponsored our Penn Dragon ISGB group since our beginning in 2006. Well the guys at Whale ask us to help in a tester program, each month they will give us a rod of glass to test. Each artists takes it home and virtually gets to play with it. We then fill out a sheet to find how workable the glass is and learn the different reactions the glass might have under different variables ( Neutral flame , reduction flame and Oxidizing flame. What type of torch we used, bottle O2 or Concentrator , Kiln setting and finally what our likes about the glass and also our dislikes. Through this program we hope to find new exciting color reactions and color combinations and improve the workability of the glass. These results are then documented and compared with each member of the group. I really enjoy this because it is amazing how many different color combinations and inspirations comes in seeing different artist use the exact same rod of glass. So for February we received ( CIM #562) Ming Blue Coe 104. It was very easy to melt and very compatible to other 104 coe . The hue reminds me of Effetre Lapis blue but I still felt that Effetre seems to me to be much more intense and shiner coming out of the kiln. But I did not get as much bubbling with CIM as I did with Effetre.

My only other tip is to alway clean your glass rods before melting it will it make your beads shine more and the glass to melt easier. Lou

I wanted to learn chainmaille for a long time, I have created so many beads that I think would go perfect with this art form. But with the economy as it is, I really couldn't afford another class at this time. So I started searching the Internet for a good beginner tutorial and information about beginner weaves. Bonnie makes beautiful hand sawed jumprings and her care and attention to details in her jumprings and chainmaille kits are simply divine. She was so helpful in giving me information on how many rings I would need and links for more good tutorial resources. I purchased her Byzantine Kit 16 gauge 4.5 and here is a picture of the bracelet I created it so dreamy . It did take some time to create this, I am still very slow at closing and opening the jumprings and not counting creating the beads to go with it. But my mother always told me good things come to those who are patient and I love the byzantine design so it was well worth the time it took. I am so very proud how it turned out so I ordered some more rings and started another one from Bonnie. And as before it came neatly packaged and the rings are cut perfectly so I just want to say thanks Bonnie for all the encouragement, information and perfectly shiny rings .

The last few days of winter is always hard for me , I long for warm days and blue Sky's. It's still cold here 37 degrees and with the wind it always feels colder. But me and Abbey bundle up today and went for a long walk around our little town. I took my new camera with us so I could practice. It's going to take a lot of practice. But it's a nice camera, and if you seen my old pictures you know I need a lot of practice and a new camera. It has a macro setting so it will be perfect for my glass and finished jewelry . And when Spring does come I am going to take wonderful close-up of the flowers, bees, and bugs.

I am slowly getting back to somewhat normal, not that I have ever been normal. With so many things going on at once it gets really crazy around here, and when Benny died, my life just seem to go into a head spin. So that is why I choose Serenity for the name of this bracelet , because for a while it was so difficulty to even go down to work on my torch. I will miss him dearly, but I never wanted him to suffer, he gave me almost 15 years of compainionship. And we had a wonderful time together, I will always carry him in my heart. Abbey , our other Boston is missing him too. She is 8 years old , and my shop's name sake , she is as sad as me , and at times more than me. So me and her and they rest of our family is trying hard to get back to normal and get back on track. so here is a couple of pic's of my new work, I hope you like it .. Lou

I haven't been on the computer in a while. I lost my very best friend and companion. Benny was the perfect dog so sweet and cute as a button. He would have been 15 in July, last November he was diagnosis with cancer and the vet only gave him him a few weeks. I prayed for more time and I am thankful God answered my prayers and gave me a couple of more months. I treasure each day we shared. But I miss him dearly and trying so desperately to fill this empty feeling. Benny was so special, it's been so hard to go down and work in my studio we spent so much time there together . No matter how long I worked at my torch he would stay by my side. He was the runt of the litter and but for such a tiny little guy he had the biggest heart. I don't think I will ever love another dog as much as I loved him. And for right now I don't want too. I will always remember our time and feel so lucky that he was a part of my life.

Welcome 2008

The past year has been a great one, making new friends , getting to visit with some of my old ones. I got a chance to reflect on some of my goals for my shop Abbey753
and personal ones for me. Some were met :
1. opening a shop
2. custom bags and labels
3. doing my first public show
4. starting a blog
but I will have to take another look at others, Abbey753 did much better than me. I have learned so much this past year but still so far to go. So one of my goals for the new year, is to devote more time to learning, I love taking classes so that is going to high on the list .. I did get some cool tools from Santa , I can't wait to use them and another goal will be learning balance between my business and personal life . It can be really hard working a full time job and pursuing a career in bead making. So this year I want to find some sort of balance between the two . One is not to spend so much time on the computer and more time on making beads . Well I promised myself more frequent posting and in less time instead of always playing catching up, thanks for stopping by and I do hope every one's holiday was wonderful.

My Best Friend

Sorry I haven't wrote anything is a few days , I have been working in my studio trying to get it organized and reorder supplies for the holiday season . It's hard to believe that summer is over and we are going into to fall. Fall in the northeast is my favorite time of year . The mountains will soon be full of color. It is already cool enough for a hoodie .. Well I have been busy working on etsybead Street Team blog it is almost a full time job at times and I was worried about my little guy, he got sick and scared me half to death.. Benny is my very best friend , he is 14 years old , a old man in dog years about 98, and come to think about it he kinda looks like an old man . Well I was scared he was so sick and the vet didn't give me very good news either. But for the last 2 weeks he is slowly getting better , I don't know how long he will be with me .. But for now he is at least eating finally, I was having to give him fluid boluses so he wouldn't be so dehydrated. I know some will say put him to sleep, but I can't . Benny doesn't seem to be in any pain, he just needs a little more help getting up and down and yes I carry him on our walks and sit him down to pee. But he does seem to getting his strength back and he always has enough strength to give me a kiss. So I will be here for him, as long as he needs it. I guess because he has always been there for me..

Stubborn as a Mule

DH had his cardiac cath done and everything went good, thank God but he needs to have surgery again . He has a couple of new blockages and his last surgery was over twenty years ago, but he is refusing to have it done. He said he will just take his chances, I have talked to him , his Doctor talked to him for over and hour but he said he just will not go through it again. He was 42 years old the first time and he was in the hospital for 6 weeks and it was over a year before he could go back to work. I don't know what else to say or do. We have explained the new technology , less hospital time , less recovery time but right now he just doesn't want to here it. And I can tell right now he is not changing his mind. Not tears, threats, or promises is going to help change his mind. I guess praying is the only thing I can do right now. Sometimes he is just as stubborn as an old mule , but I love that old mule. Good Customer Service

Some would say you shouldn't talk about it, just do the repair and keep it quiet.
But I am not perfect and sometimes even though you check and double check it a minor flaw gets through or the buyer might break it accidentally and need a repair . I am still very new to selling less than one year. But I know how hard I work for my paycheck. So when I started selling , I wanted to make sure I offered quality work in my loose beads and jewelry. A 100% guarantee no questions asked, I hate it when I go to the store and they give you such a hassle. Well I had to repair a bracelet, minor repair a little star spacer broke or I just didn't see it after I did my final look before shipping. Not really noticeable, but I know my eye would go straight to it and even though it's tiny it would shine like a neon sign . So I finished the repair and sent the bracelet back to it's owner. I feel very good about this, because I know I have done my best and the bracelet looks gorgeous. I did add a couple of dangles to it I hope she likes them . And Sue , thanks so much for being such a wonderful customer ,
you always make me smile.

Been A While

I have been so busy with etsybead blog posting and my own personal life I haven't got to post here in awhile. I just finished updating etsybead a few minutes ago. And I watched a movie tonight with my hubby , first time in months he has really been neglected since I opened my little shop on etsy. He is off this week so I promised we would spend quality time together and it's been really nice. But I also found out he has to go for a cardiac cath on Wednesday , He didn't want me to worry , because he has had two heart attacks already and with one he ended up with quadruple bypass. We spent our first wedding anniversary with his first. I really don't know what I would do without him, he is a very special guy, heaven sent just for me. Well I will refuse to think bad thoughts , I know God will see us through this . God bless Lou

Terra Glass

Terra glass by Double Helix, is just so beautiful and like a lot of beautiful things extremely expensive. I got a 1/2 pound of Terra glass right after my birthday . For days I just look at it, I was really afraid to even use it because I didn't want to ruin it . But for the last couple of weeks I have been working with it. In my first glass class, my instructor told us to keep a journal, write down glass reactions, color combinations , what each glass did under the flame, etc. I still keep that journal and write down everything. With Terra the least little thing could determine if the glass would strike or not. Many factors play a role : Oxygen ratio to propane , how hot I let the glass get , whether or not to use a reduction flame or a high oxygen flame so many things makes such a big difference . But I love a challenge and I can say Terra, is definitely giving me one . I haven't mastered Terra yet but I do like the progress I am making . It has slow my work down , and I haven't been able to add anything to my shop this week but Terra is just so gorgeous it reminds me of a rainbow or a oil sleek in a puddle on a rainy day . I tell myself don't get frustrated enjoy the journey and I do. One day the lampwork angels will smile on me and Terra will become second nature to me under the flame. thanks for listening Lou

Thank God it's Friday, well that is what most people say, but Friday is the beginning of my work week at the hospital and I can tell you it seems to be the busies on weekends. But I think any day is a good day to thank God so I will join ya and say Thank God for Fridays. Well this week I have been cleaning house , catching up with everyday things which is always so much fun. But I did get a few
hours on my torch and finished a couple of bead sets. And as usual me and my camera are not speaking. It's raining and we have dark overcast. I did get a picture of this one set , my husband said it reminded him of peacock feathers. I am not real good with naming my beads so I guess that is what it will be.Or maybe swirling peacock feathers. So I will post them and hopeful, when I get in from work tomorrow I will try to take pictures of the other two sets.
I have also been working on etsybead blog trying to get up and running it can be a pain but I do enjoy it so I am not complaining. Well Have a nice weekend. Lou

Well I am still working on trying to find out the secrets to using double helix terra glass , it both fun and somewhat frustrating but I will get hopefully sooner or later. Well I finish my challenge, I am hoping it looks good it was hard to get a good picture because the sunlight really reflects through the beads. It took me awhile but I love it. It has a lot of different beads with special techniques and special glass - 2 beads are created from terra by double helix. I am still learning how to use this glass but at least I can get it to react. It's just keeping the shape afterwards because it is much stiffer after the glass is struck and harder to shape with out reheating. Then I lost the reaction. But I am up for the challenge it might take me awhile to figure it out but I love rainbow effect you can get. Well take a look let me know what you think. A Love - hate of Black - White

Black and white glass beads are fun and provide a wonderful contrast between two classic colors. But I have a love - hate relationship when creating them. It is a slow process because if the black smears it will show it's true color which is purple . Moretti black glass is truly a very deep and I mean deep amethyst. But it appears black, unless it smears then you can see the purple. And intense black is very expensive and it has it's own little problems of frazzles if heated to much . (Frazzles look like spider webbing) So it can be a very slow process making black and white beads but it is always well worth the headaches.

New theme this week for etsyBead is deep blue sea. I love blue, I read somewhere blue is the color of the Ocean, the sky and deep mystical dreams. I like that it so inspirational, So last night I dug through my loose beads and I made about 10 - 15 more. So for this weeks challenge I decided No rules, just create a fun mix of different colors of blue and see where it takes me. That's sometimes hard for meat times, but I see other bead designers do and it looks wonderful . So here is hoping it will all come together for me. Here is a picture of what I will start with there is some pretty beads in this mix. I also finished a more graphic bead set in black in white so it did help me get over the need to match everything. Earthly Jewels Bracelet

Earthy Colors is the theme this week for etsybead street team , I was lucky to have some beads already in my shop to list. But I am trying to produce a bracelet or necklace each week for the challenge. Sometimes it hard because of work but I finally finished last night and took pictures this morning. I have such a difficult time with the pictures because I take them out doors and the weather and camera don't always cooperate, and the photographer (me) is still trying to learn how to use this old camera. But the bracelet is very pretty , it is a long bead created from moretti glass browns, blues and silver foil and transparent blue softly etched and silver wire all wire wrapped with sterling silver . Oh I made my own clasp too, I really like it.

Dreamy Cobalt Blue Starry Night Bracelet

Cobalt Blue , I absolutely love this color and the reactions between O2 and propane is unbelievable. I worked on my torch all night and I finished this bracelet and a special order I had. I can't believe just how pretty this bracelet is, it reminds me of a beautiful starry night. I keep practicing this same technique over and over to get it down right and each time I fall in love with these beads . They are so clear and dreamy . It was created from cobalt blue and silver foil then encased with
clear . Slowly I can tell I am getting a little better and one day I will be able to make with ease... Lou

The new theme of the week for etsybead is Pearls , I never worked with pearls and lamp work so this will absolutely was a challenge . But I finally got it done I know it started Sunday and I am late but I work full time at the hospital so I couldn't get on my torch till Tuesday night. Then yesterday I spent the day trying to figure out what to make and the slight adjustment with the wire gauge. So here is my two pieces for the challenge a bracelet of course because I love bracelets and a lariat which my girlfriend loved when I showed her and hinted about an early Christmas present . Well I will have to work on another one for her and surprise her with a Christmas in July ...

Oh I have been really busy working Etsybead Street team blog for the last week and a half I am so excited about it. But I haven't got to post on my poor little blog site in a while . The Etsybead street team is a really big team of talented bead makers and jewelry designs a great group to be apart of. And we finally got our official street team status from Etsy . Everyone is working so hard to pull this team together. Well yesterday was my birthday , it was so nice got to go to a nice little spa in Jim Thourpe called Soapothecary and get the works. I ask for the young sexy vibrant look and I think I got it too. I felt so relaxed afterwards and my hair looks fabulous thanks Russ you are the best. I just wish all my children and grandchildren could have come home but each of us have such busy lives it's hard to get them all home at the same time. But I got a wonderful email with birthday wishes from my daughter Julie and my grand babies William and Stephanie they are so sweet.
And my daughter that lives here in Pa and my other two children came over and we rode our bikes down at the Lehigh Gorge the day before and had a picnic . So I have to say it has been a very nice birthday I'm might be getting older but I love where I am at in life . I think I am just getting better. Slow as a Turtle

It's bogo week on Etsy Glass Artists, and Etsy Bead started their theme of the week which is Summer Lovin colors and I finally got it finished and posted and trying to make beads and clean house and get ready for work tomorrow and my two little Bostons want to go for a walk and I have to start dinner OMG I am so late and all I want to really do is take a nap . Too much to do in such little time to do it in . Okay deep breath, now I will tell ya about the Etsy Bead Weekly theme every week we will have a different theme and post it with a discount each artist will decide their own discount but I know there will be some good buys. Here is my bracelet it I finally got it finished and it came out so pretty . I put a little silver turtle on it because I am so slow . First Night Back at Work

Well I am finally released to go back to work it's been a long 3 weeks and my patience have been pulled thin . But I am feeling much better, and life is getting back to a more normal routine. Here is one of my favorite pictures of Stephanie, she is so cute and sassy , and such a girly girl it was my first avatar when I open my shop on etsy. She is a little older now , but I love this picture . I posted a better picture of the bracelet , it is barely 5 inches and I had to make tiny beads so they would be in proportion to her little wrist, it is so cute and I am proud of it . Frustration is an emotion that occurs in situations where one is blocked from reaching a personal goal. The more important the goal, the greater the frustration. It is comparable to anger . I am feeling very frustrated, I just got back from the doc, and the news is he still will not release me to go back to work yet and absolutely no firing up of little torch. It's been almost two weeks since I got to work on my torch, I hate being sick and I hate being off work and most of all I hate not being able to play on my torch. Inspiration

I am hoping to get back on my torch this week , but until the Doctor clears it I have to stay away. I caught a really bad bug from somewhere, and end up with pneumonia. Until I can make beads I will have to use this time to get some inspiration for future work. Inspiration is everywhere if you open yourself to it. Color combinations in nature is a big source for me. Know one does it better than God, just look around and you will know what I am talking about. Then there is print ads in magazines and displays and collections in stores and shops . I carry a little note book for to jot down a color combo or a pattern I see . Inspiration surrounds us just keep yourself open and let the creativity flow.

I was hoping to get in on this sale , but I had to change my schedule around at work so I could have some family time yea it's well needed. But I did get a treasury for some of the etsy bead designers that showcases some of their work. A sneak peak it is called so check out the treasury list there is some gorgeous jewels listed. The sale starts May 19 and goes through May 22 with a wide variety of jewelry styles and prices. I also finished a new set of beads last night using some Ask 104 pink lady slipper glass and some hand pulled stringers , I love the streaky colors you can get from this glass. Well I have to go to sleep now I work tonight 7 pm to 7 am it's a crazy shift and you always feel somewhat sleep deprived. I finally finished this bracelet it is a donation for a contest we will be sponsoring later this month . It will be a business card design contest for Etsy Glass Artists. The winner will receive glass items from the many talented glass artist in EGA. Well I finally finished my donation and here is a pic . I hope the winner enjoys it as much as I did creating it. It does looks prettier in person. Because I am not a photographer. I do try but I have an old camera, and an Old photographer taking the pic. The beads were created by me using Moretti Glass ,silver foil and the end of the day frits. I use sterling silver wire to wire wrap them and sterling silver jump rings and clasp. The sun is shining, the birds are singing , my husband is always telling not to worry and he is right things always have away of working out. So new song for the day is Don't Worry be Happy . I have so much to be thankful for and so very blessed . My beads are coming along, and I have support all around . Warm Sunshine , Cool Blues and Purple Passion

I ordered some new frit, last week from Val, and I am finally getting to try them so here is a few pic's of some of the beads. I just wish I could take better pictures . I will try to take some better ones tomorrow . But so far I love the frits . I love playing with different base colors and flames to see what this frits will do. With one little change you can get a whole different bead, a little more oxygen little less propane or reduced it by adding more propane and less oxygen. It is one of the reasons of love working with it so much. Val, has such a large assortment of color combinations it hard to choose which frits you want to try . Let me know what you think . Well I worked all night trying to take my mind off of things, it's just hard sometimes not to wonder about why some people make it out of a tragic accident and others don't. I got this email from a friend it did help me feel better it contained this verse :

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven:

It is so beautiful today , after 5 1/2 inches of snow last Monday I was beginning to wonder when will we ever have spring . I just got home from work and it is so beautiful and sunny , my two Bostons were just as excited as me . They like to go for a walk as soon as I get home so we did. I finished up a couple of sets of beads last week finally and made a new bracelet. I have to work everyday till Monday so I will not get to post them until then . I wish I could just work in my studio full time but right not we just can't afford it . Well enjoy the sunshine today and hug someone you love , life is way to short . Lou.

My heart goes out to the families , friends, students and teachers of Virginia Tech such a tragedy. So many lives lost in such a horrible incident . I don't really know what to say except you are in my prayers. I can't imagine how they will be able to deal with this. It's just so sad.

Cranberry Wine

Well I was so excited when I opened my kiln this morning . Beautiful vivid pink and purple beads , I don't know if I will get a picture of both sets before I have to go to work but I will try . I am so tempted to keep them for myself but that will not pay for glass, lessons and supplies. One day I will be able to but not yet. Happy Easter

Well I had a wonderful Easter my oldest son and his wife came home from Indiana for Easter.
And I got to visit with my granddaughters Maddy and Anna , they have grown so much. It's been about 6 months since their last visit so it was hard to see them leave today. But hopefully this summer, we can go visit them and stay a week or so. My oldest daughter cooked dinner and my other two grandchildren had me playing wii (wee) , they really got a big laugh watching me play . Well I do hope your Easter, was as nice as mine was and you got to spend time with you love ones . That is truly what matters , in life when you get down to it.
